A Shadow Of Things To Come...

TABERNACLE

INTRODUCTION: A SYMBOLIC TAPESTRY

Within the pages of the Old Testament, the intricate design and construction of the tabernacle stand as a testaments to God's dwelling among His people, the Israelites. As we embark on a journey through it's sacred beauty, we uncover a rich tapestry of symbols and shadows that foreshadow the profound truths in the New Testament.
The tabernacle's three distinct parts - the outer court, the inner court and the Holy of holies, reveal a profound parallel to the three-fold composition of the believer: body, soul and spirit.

The Outer Court - The Body/Natural
The Inner Court - The Soul
The Holy of Holies - The Spirit

In this exploration, we will uncover the symbolic significance of each element, unraveling the remarkable ways in which the OT Tabernacle prefigures the spiritual reality experienced by believers in the New Testament.
Through this remarkable analogy, we gain deeper insights into our relationship with God and the transformative power of a life fully surrendered and in submission to Him by faith.
Let us delve into the intricacies of this symbolism, tracing the shadows of the OT design to the NT tabernacle within the believer's composition because it is through this exploration that we deepen our understanding of God's design for fellowship, worship, intimacy, communication, transformation and transfiguration.

THE OUTER COURT

The Outer Court was the outermost region of the tabernacle. This area contained the bronze alter, where sacrafices were offered for the forgiveness of sins, and the basin for ceremonial cleansing.
The shedding of blood on the alter served as a temporary atonement until the ultimate sacrafice of Jesus Christ in the New Testament. The basin served as a place for the priests to wash before approaching the alter/entering the tabernacle.

THE FLESH

In the New Testament, the outer court represents the physical nature/5 natural senses of the believer. Just as the outer court was the place where sacrafices were made and cleansing took place, our bodies are instruments for offering ourselves as living sacrafices to God (Romans 12:1). We are called to present our bodies as instruments of righteousness, using thme to serve and glorify God in our actions and behaviours. It also emphasises the importance of maintaining purity and holiness, allowing the Spirit of God to continually cleanse and transform us. As we repent from dead works, wash our mind with the Word and turn toward God, we are able to go into deeper places in our relationship with God.

THE INNER COURT

The Inner court of the tabernacle was the space betweeen the Holy of Holies and the outer court. It contained the alter of incense where fragrant offerings were made (symbolising prayers of the people), the golden lampstand/menorah (symbolising the constant fire/anointing of the Spirit) and the table of shewbread (representing worship and fellowship with God).
It is also important to mention the 7 flames  burning on the menorah which represent the 7 Spirits of God , as well the significance of the anointing oil which is produced by the intense crushing of the olive (the crushing of the flesh that produces the anointing for the fire of God).

THE SOUL

In the context of believers, the soul  is the spiritual part that represents our mind, will and emotions. It encompasses our thoughts, intellect, desires, affections and decision making. The inner court symbolises the realm of our soul where we turn toward God and engage in worship, communion and fellowship with God. It is through our soul that we offer up prayers, meditate on God's word, seek His will and experience His presence. By turning towards God, we experience a renewal of our minds and our soul's are transformed as He aligns our thoughts and desires with His truth and purpose (Romans 12:2). As our minds are renewed, our desires are aligned with His will and not ours and our emotions transformed by His love and light, we experience the depth of fellowship and sustenance found in an intimate relationship with God.

HOLY OF HOLIES

The Holy of holies was the innermost and most sacred part of the tabernacle. It was separated from the rest of the tabernacle by a thick veil, representing the barrier between God's holiness and man's sinfulness (darkness).
Only the high priest could enter the Holy of Holies, and he could only to so once a year on the Day of Atonement. This space housed the Ark of the Covenant, which contained the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments and represented God's presence among His people/

THE SPIRIT

In the New Testament, believer's spirits are analogues to the Holy of Holies as the spirit is the deepest and most inner part of the believer. When we accept Jesus Christ as our Saviour, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us, transforming our spirits and uniting us with God (1 Corinthians 6:17, Ephesians 1:13-14). Our spirits become the dwelling place of God's presence, and we have direct access to Him through the indwelling Holy Spirit (Ephesians 2:18). This intimate connection allows us to commune with God, receive His guidance and experience His love and peace. Our spirit is the part that connects with God and enables a personal relationship with Him.
